We are approaching winter weather.

This is the time of calm in beekeeping when the colonies are smaller and the physical management of colony is substantially reduced.   Inspection of colonies may be every two weeks or longer if daytime temps are too cold. 

Weather conditions on the South Carolina Coastal Plain are not normally harsh.   Night temps during November and December rarely drop into the low 20’s.    Daytime temps will be in the low 50’s.  There will be days when the temps are in the lower to mid 60's.   There will be some bee activity during the day when temps are in the mid 40’s.

The colonies will be clustering to keep the brood chamber warm on cold days.  Temps next to the developing larvae must be 93F degrees  The queen will be laying much less until and will only increase laying after the December 22. 2024 when the daylight levels begin to increase.

No flowers...no honey at this time.

Beekeepers are focused on 2025 needs.
